QR codes on screens: help viewers take the next step
A QR code helps only when people know why they should scan it. Name the destination and check that the journey works on a smartphone.
Name the destination
“View the menu” explains more than “Scan now”. Give each display one specific next step and link directly to the relevant page. A general homepage may leave people searching unnecessarily.
Test the code and destination together
Scan the code on the actual screen from the usual viewing distance. Open the destination on a smartphone: is it clear, and can people complete the intended action? A readable code alone is not enough.
Before and after: clear QR labels
| Destination | Too generic | Suitable label |
|---|---|---|
| Menu | Scan now | View the menu |
| Product details | Find out more | View details of this table lamp |
| Event registration form | Click here | Register for the music evening |
| Trip information | Discover | View travel information and opening hours for the destination |
Provide an alternative and assign responsibility
Include a short web address or a person to contact. Check links after changes and remove expired offers. These examples are design suggestions; a QR code does not create a registration or booking service.
