Choosing screen videos: what works without sound?
Videos in reception areas, restaurants and shop windows are often watched without sound. The main message needs to be visible, even when someone starts watching halfway through.
Check the message with sound off
Mute the video and ask someone else what it shows. Attractive footage can create atmosphere. An offer or instruction also needs clear information on screen.
Use text with a purpose
Short overlays can explain the location, offer or contact. Subtitles help convey speech but may be hard to read at a distance. Test them on the actual screen rather than only on your computer.
Before and after: a fictional product video
| Information | Spoken only | Clear on screen |
|---|---|---|
| Product | The narrator names the model | A short model-name overlay |
| Benefit | The narrator explains the adjustable lamp | The adjustment is visible, with “Adjustable lamp arm” |
| Contact | Advice is mentioned at the end | Readable “Ask in store for advice”; contact also accessible elsewhere |
Check more than the opening and ending
Visitors often see only part of a clip. Test starting midway and keep essential information accessible elsewhere. Prepare the video before playback; this guide does not assume automatic subtitling by SUISSE-VIDEO.
