Label recorded footage and live views clearly
Check the image source first. Then choose an accurate label and decide what to display if the source is outdated or unavailable.
1. Identify the source and its purpose
Distinguish between a saved recording, a regularly updated still image and a running camera stream. Confirm this with the provider rather than relying on the video title. Recorded footage can introduce an outing or destination. A current view requires a suitable, verified source.
2. Prepare a label that matches the source
State the location and image type. For recordings, add the recording period if known. For an updated still image, give the actual capture time, including the date and time zone where needed. The retrieval time does not confirm when the image was taken. If the capture time is unknown, do not describe the image as current.
3. Check delays and updates
Compare the source information with playback on the intended device. Check whether a timestamp belongs to the image or is simply an overlaid running clock. A running stream can also be delayed. Use “Live” only when the source and playback justify it; state a known delay if relevant to visitors. A camera view does not replace verified weather or operating information.
Before and after: clear image labels
| Source | Misleading label | Suitable label |
|---|---|---|
| Saved landscape video | Today’s weather | Recorded landscape footage · not a live view |
| Updated still image | Current | Camera image · captured on [date] at [time, time zone] |
| Verified running camera stream | Mountain panorama | Live camera [location] · state a known delay if relevant |
| Unavailable or unverified source | Old image labelled “Live” | Current view unavailable · please ask our team |
4. Decide on a clear replacement
Prepare a message such as “Current view unavailable. Please ask our team”. Alternatively, show a landscape video clearly labelled as recorded footage. Check how the responsible person can change the source and text in the SUISSE-VIDEO project. Unless automatic failure detection has been set up and tested, arrange manual checks and updates.
5. Test the label and playback on the screen
Ask someone else to explain whether they are seeing a recording, an updated still image or a running stream. Check that the label is readable without sound. Test a source change in a test project and check the replacement message. Compare all language versions and assign someone to review the source regularly.
